Book Strolls
An African storybook stroll at Riverfront Park
June 22, 2024
Riverfront Park, Spokane gave us a space just north of the blue bridge, to display pages from the picture book Gizo Gizo: A Tale from the Zongo Lagoon, by Emily Williamson and a group of school children in Ghana. The poster-format display with its delightful illustrations and message of water conservation was a perfect fit for the family-friendly and international outreach of the Expo ‘74 commemmoration. Thanks to the Riverfront Park crew and our volunteers Christabel and Miriam for their invaluable help with this event!
Book Strolls in Accra
The book stroll is a public literacy idea which works particularly well in places like Accra, giving many more children access to nicely produced picture books that are centered on their world.
We pitched in to support Mmofra Foundation’s adaptation of the ‘book stroll concept for a Ghanaian context, in collaboration with U.S. writers Sarah Warren and Catherine Urdahl who are active proponents of outdoor public book walks.
With permission from authors and publishers, the first books to be adapted were Suma Went Walking by Nana Dadson. (English and Ga editions, Afram Publications, Ghana, Ltd) and City Sounds by Kathy Knowles (Osu Children's Library Fund).
These strolls have been enjoyed by hundreds of people in a variety of public locations in Ghana, at events like the Pa Gya! literary festival, the Joy FM party in Aburi Botanical Garden, a World Literacy Day celebration, and the Ghana Garden and Flower Show.
